The Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a popular tourist destination. It is one of the park’s four sectors and is situated in the park’s eastern region, overlooking the Great Rift Valley. Ruhija is a famous starting location for gorilla tracking and is also home to elephants, duikers, and several bird species.
Gorilla tracking is among the most popular activities in Ruhija. Tourists are brought into the forest by knowledgeable guides to follow and see mountain gorillas in their natural environment. The experience is both thrilling and sobering, as visitors observe the beauty and intricacy of these gentle giants at close proximity. Permits are required in advance to participate in the gorilla tracking experience, which is restricted to a small number of tourists each day.
In addition to gorilla tracking, Ruhija provides guests with a range of other activities. Around 350 kinds of birds, such as the African green broadbill, the western green tinkerbird, and the African emerald cuckoo, reside in the region, making nature hikes and birding popular pastimes. Also, visitors may explore local waterfalls, such as the breathtaking Mubwindi Swamp waterfall.
The Ruhija section is readily accessible from the rest of the park and its environs. It is roughly a three-hour drive from Kabale, a town frequented by park visitors, and is also accessible from the adjacent town of Kisoro. Tourists may arrange transportation via their lodging establishment or a local tour company.
